CME Group Inc. (Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade) is an American financial market company that operates an options and futures exchange. Based in Chicago, CME owns and operates large derivatives and futures exchanges in Chicago and New York City, and online exchange facilities in London. Founded in 2007, the group was the first to launch Bitcoin future trading, which it did in December 2017, two weeks prior to Bitcoin reaching its $20,000 all time high. Some claim that the introduction of futures, which allowed Wall St traders to short the price of Bitcoin, was a core reason behind the crash in early 2018 and the bear market that followed.
