Public Transport in Argentina Now Accepts Bitcoin

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The official government transport system in Argentina is pushing for the mass adoption of Bitcoin, as the Sistema Único de Boleto Electrónico (SUBE) allows users to top up their cards using Bitcoin. SUBE cards are used by more than 7 million people across 37 different locations on various public transport systems, including rail and bus systems. SUBE cardholders can now top up their card using Bitcoin, which will then be automatically be converted into SUBE credits and can be spent on the various forms of public transport.

Minimum Bitcoin Top-Up Required

While SUBE allows users to top-up their cards using Bitcoin, there is a minimum top-up value of 50 pesos worth of Bitcoin – around 0.00037 Bitcoin. This minimum top-up is a tiny amount and highlights Argentina’s receptiveness towards digital currencies, including Bitcoin. Argentina is currently facing a bout of hyperinflation, but Bitcoin appears to be providing a way out for locals. The country is home to several Bitcoin ATMs, giving Argentinians a quick and easy way to get hold of Bitcoin so they can top-up their transport cards.

Crypto Coming to Transit Systems Near You

Go-Ahead runs one of the UK’s largest public transport networks, and it has recently teamed up with DOVU to reward travelers with crypto for sharing data about their journey. This data will then be used to improve service in areas where travel times are slower and keep travelers happy. Go-Ahead also operates in major cities around the world, meaning this new rewards blockchain app could be coming to a public transport system near you very soon.

Using Cryptos for Travel

From buses and trains to airplanes and hotels, crypto is revolutionizing the way we look at transport and travel. More Stamps Global is now accepting more than 40 different cryptos on its website, allowing travelers to book their holidays and pay using digital currencies. Thanks to the low fee nature of crypto payments, travelers will be able to get more bang for their buck and save a pretty penny when booking travel, whether it be a bus journey or a flight to the other side of the world.
While not all 7 million public transport users in Argentina will start using Bitcoin, a large percentage will quickly adopt the new payment method. As the country heads further into the realms of hyperinflation, Bitcoin usage will become imperative in day-to-day life, so it’s critical to lay the groundwork early on. As we have seen in Venezuela, crypto provides a lifeline when there appears to be no other option. Hopefully, Bitcoin can help Argentina escape the clutches of hyperinflation and keep citizens safe.
