Developer Creates WooCommerce Plugin to Accept XRP

Reading Time: 2 minutes

WooCommerce is an e-commerce platform that’s used by millions of online stores worldwide. It’s impressive nature means that developers from the crypto community have been working on creating plugins to allow these stores to accept cryptos. This time around, XRPL Labs launched a competition for a developer to create a plugin for WooCommerce to accept XRP. Jesper Wallin is the man that stepped up to the challenge – creating the plugin in under a week.

3.3 million online stores can now add the XRP payment plugin and start accepting XRP as a form of payment in under 10 minutes!

WooCommerce Accepting Cryptos

This isn’t the first crypto related plugin for WooCommerce to hit the shelves. Last year a developer created a plugin that allowed e-commerce stores to accept IOTA. The plugin has been created to be as simple and easy to use as possible. All users have to do is download it, install it, insert the desired wallet address to receive funds and you’re good to go. Then came the Strike API – allowing users to accept Lightning Network payments in WooCommerce. Similarly to the IOTA plugin, Strike is quick and easy to set up and you can start accepting Lightning Network payments in a matter of seconds.

XRPL Labs Issuing Bounties

The new WooCommerce plugin was the result of a grassroots community effort and an associated bounty. Wietse Wind – XRPL Labs Founder – posted the bounty on Twitter back on March 7th, offering 2,000 XRP to anyone who can complete the task. The XRP community then chipped in another 2,635 XRP to the prize pool – a clear sign the XRP community wants to be able to transact in XRP. Wind then took to Twitter to announce that Wallin won the bounty and shared the link to the new WooCommerce plugin – what a standup guy.

What’s Next for WooCommerce?

While WooCommerce hasn’t requested any of these plugins to be built, there is no argument that it’s the e-commerce platform of choice for WordPress users. We have already seen plugins built for the top cryptocurrencies out there, but there are still a few big names missing from the platform. Given how Justin Sun – Tron Founder – loves a bit of PR, it wouldn’t come as a shock if Tron launches its own WooCommerce plugin in the coming months. That being said, Sun looks rather busy right now trying to patch up Tether and bring it to the Tron network.

If you have a WooCommerce store and want to accept XRP, all you have to do is head over to GitHub, download the plugin, install it, and add in your wallet – then you’re good to go. As we enter a new age where cryptocurrencies are quickly becoming a popular payment method, not accepting cryptos is a foolish mistake – especially with how easy it is to set up.
